Get into Expedition Leading

The commercial expedition industry is an exciting and fulfilling one but is not easy to get into. At the same time, outside of the commercial sector, people can find themselves in an expedition or fieldwork leadership role without the back up or training they may like. This course aims to provide people with a grounding in how the industry works and a basis in the hard and soft skills required.

This one day course combines looking at opportunities in the expedition sector with an overview of the hard and soft skills required to work in the industry.

For those interested in learning more about getting into and on in the expedition sector we will look at structures for qualifications and the opportunities available. We will also use scenario based exercises to look at the soft skills which are vital in leading and organising expeditions.

It is appropriate for:

  • Leaders who have worked in the outdoors (for example through the military or in outdoor education) and want to get into expedition work.
  • People who have done an expedition as a team member and are interested in getting to the next stage.
  • Students interested in running their own expeditions and considering getting into the industry.

Course Content:

  • Overview of the Expedition Industry: A brief overview of the industry and the variety of opportunities available, along with a discussion of their pros and cons.
  • Qualifications and Training: A summary of the hard and soft skills required and a guide to the qualifications and training opportunities available.
  • Expedition leadership: A look at what is involved in expedition leadership, styles of leadership and their appropriateness to different types of expedition.
  • Environmental Protocols: A key responsibility for leaders in the outdoor industry we will provide an overview of the considerations expedition leaders must be aware of.
  • Soft skills: In many ways the expedition leader’s greatest assets are their soft skills. We will look at scenario discussions, practical exercises and also look at reviewing and personal development on expeditions.

Prerequisites:

The course assumes no previous knowledge. However it is anticipated that many of the participants will be active in the outdoors professionally or personally. No previous experience is necessary and it would equally suit anyone planning to get involved in an expedition for the first time or just interested in learning more.
